Can I switch advisors if my interests change?
Yes, we fully expect students’ (and our faculty’s) interests to change over time. It is not uncommon for students to change advisors or topics after completing the Qualifying Phase.
Can I have two advisors?
Yes. See Advisors and Committees.
Can I have an advisor from outside the department?
Yes, but you must also have a department faculty member serve internal advisor as well. Outside advisors must be approved by the department.
Can I have committee members from outside the department?
Yes, but at least half of the committee must be departmental faculty.
Can I use a course from outside the department as an elective?
Yes, you may use one course from outside the department as an elective, but not all courses will be accepted. The specific course must be approved in advance by the Director of Graduate Studies.
Can I take a course not on the list of approved electives as an elective?
Yes, but not all courses will be accepted. The specific course must be approved in advance by the Director of Graduate Studies. Topics courses or seminars will be approved as electives only if the student does substantial work beyond the normal workload for a seminar.
