The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) has named Andrew Chien, William Eckhardt Distinguished Service Professor at UChicago CS, to the Information Science & Technology (ISAT) Study Group beginning in July 2022. The group brings 35 of the brightest scientists and engineers together to identify new areas of development in computer science and information technology and to recommend future possible research directions.

The ISAT Study Group was established by DARPA in 1987 to support its technology offices and provide continuing and independent assessment of the state of advanced Information Science technology as it relates to the U.S. Department of Defense.

“DARPA has been responsible for many foundational innovations in computing,” Chien said. “ISAT is a great opportunity to help our government find the best areas and ideas for research investment, so I am happy to serve.”

Chien is also a Fellow of the ACM, IEEE, and AAAS, Editor-in-Chief of the Communications of the ACM (CACM), and on Advisory Boards for several universities and corporate research laboratories.
